Stem Cell Applications in Cat

Stem cells are the main actors of new generation therapies. Hundreds of studies are carried out in this field all over the world and in our country. And it has enormous potential. Significant advances have been made in the treatment of autoimmune diseases and inflammatory diseases with its immunomodulatory properties in cats.

Chronic Gingivostomatitis (Gum Diseases): It is the most common problem among cats in recent years. The disease, which is painful and progresses with increased salivation, difficulty in eating and weakening, which can start at a young age, causes the cat to lose all its teeth. They become edentulus at a young age. Despite the extraction of the teeth, in many cases the disease recurs later on. 70% success is achieved with stem cell therapy.

Asthma: It is a recurrent disease with a cough that does not heal and difficulty in breathing. Oral or inhaled corticosteroids and bronchodilators are used in the treatment of the disease affecting the upper and lower respiratory tract in cats. These treatments can cause side effects over time. The use of stem cells is safe, that is, no side effects are expected and their effectiveness has been demonstrated by clinical studies.

Chronic or Acute Renal Failure: : It poses a serious life-threatening risk to cats. Very few cases respond to treatment once the disease is established, especially in chronic renal failure. The survival time can be estimated according to the extent of the damage to the kidney. Some cats are genetically predisposed to kidney disease. Research and clinical studies have shown that stem cell treatments are promising. It should not be forgotten that time is needed for the cell to be effective in the treatment. In patients with renal failure risk, MSC applications should be performed in the early period.

Osteoarthritis: It has been evaluated among effective alternative applications in recent years due to its reparative effects, increasing the quality of life, reducing pain and restoring the quality of life, especially in elderly cats.

Spine Injuries: Falling from a height, traffic accident, getting into the car engine in winter, and various home accidents are the most common damages in cats. It often results in euthanasia or paralysis for life. In such cases, especially early applications can enable them to walk again and continue their lives.

Eye Diseases: Dry eye and corneal injuries in cats.

Eosinophilic Plaque and Granulomas: It is a common problem in the clinic. It is an autoimmune disease that can affect the eyes, mouth and face, lips, skin, respiratory system, stomach and intestines, and shows clinical symptoms depending on the organ it affects. Stem cell therapy protocol can be applied in cases that recur and do not respond to classical treatments.

Chronic Hepatitis: Stem cell therapies and studies aiming to compensate parenchymal and stromal tissue loss and to fill the liver with healthy cells are designed under the title of curative and reparative treatments in liver failure.

Chronic enteropathies such as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) can cause serious, non-healing problems in cats that require lifelong diet and treatment. It results from changes in the gastrointestinal mucosal immune system and loss of tolerance to intestinal antigens. Stem cell applications show reliable and effective results in the treatment of these diseases.

Stem Cell Applications in Dogs

As StemAnima under the umbrella of Stembio, we produce Stem Cells using high quality standards and advanced technology.

At the Stem Cell Center in Tübitak, we prepare mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for autologous and allogeneic use in cGMP Standard.

The most common uses of MSCs in dogs:

  • Osteoarthritis,
  • Tendon injuries,
  • Cartilage defects,
  • Fast and safe fracture healing, especially wounds with tissue loss.

Potential usage areas;

  • Neurosurgery, partial paralysis,
  • Liver, kidney and heart patients,
  • Pain control,
  • Autoimmune diseases,
  • Inflammatory diseases,
  • Atopy,
  • Allergic diseases,
  • Dry eye, corneal injuries,
  • Organ damage.

Stem Cell Applications in Horses

Tendons and ligaments are of great importance for horses throughout their entire lives. Especially in sports horses, loads on joints and tensions in tendons and ligaments cause damage. These can be repetitive damages. In some cases, even if it causes lameness for a while and heals, fibrotic healing tissues cause weakening of the area, thus causing repetitive irreversible damage. In applications with stem cells, it is aimed to regenerate the tendon matrix. Thus, tissue healing is ensured and repetition of injuries is tried to be prevented.

Scope of application

  • Tendon and Ligament damages,
  • Joint diseases,
  • Osteoarthritis,
  • Bone damages,
  • Osteochondral defects,
  • Autoimmune diseases,
  • Roaring (Laryngeal Neuropathy),
  • Uveitis,
  • Corneal damages.
